Jannik Sinner clinches victory over Daniil Medvedev, securing his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.
In his first big final, Jannik Sinner was losing badly, down two sets. He looked lost and exhausted, even telling his team he felt "dead" between points. Daniil Medvedev, his opponent, seemed confident and in control.
But Sinner refused to give up. He fought back harder than ever.
Despite the odds against him, the 22-year-old managed an incredible comeback. He won the match 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, securing his first-ever Grand Slam title.
"It's going to take some time to process everything," Sinner reflected. "I'm incredibly happy with how I handled myself today. The situation on the court was really tough. The most important part was the support I received throughout these two weeks. I felt like many people were watching from home, so I just did my best. I faced some difficulties today being two sets down in just over an hour, but I tried to stay positive."
With this monumental win, Sinner becomes only the third Italian man to secure a Grand Slam title and the first since Adriano Panatta in 1976. At 22 years and 165 days, he also becomes the youngest man to win the Australian Open since Novak Djokovic in 2008. Additionally, he is the second man born in the 2000s to win a Grand Slam title, following Carlos Alcaraz. It underscores the dominance of the Big Three and how they have quashed the aspirations of an entire generation, as there are only two men born in the 1990s with a Grand Slam title.
He became the first player in the Open era to lose two Grand Slam finals in five sets after initially leading 2-0.
Medvedev experienced consecutive defeats in Australian Open finals — against Djokovic in 2021 and Nadal the following year despite holding a two-set advantage.
He managed to win three five-set matches to advance to this year's championship, marking his sixth appearance in a Grand Slam final.
Sinner had only dropped one set in six rounds, facing Djokovic in a third-set tiebreaker, until he lost two consecutive sets to Medvedev.
It wasn't until the sixth game of the fifth set that Medvedev seized control and clinched his maiden Grand Slam title.
